E-mail Service Outage
- From:
- LavaNet Technical Support <support@lava.net>
- Date:
- Mon, 03 Jul 2006 10:17:00 -1000
Starting about 5pm on Saturday an issue started with a mailing list
service offered by LavaNet to one of our customers that ultimately resulted
in a mail loop that caused a flood of undeliverable email to eat up all
available mail server resources. This caused the email server to become
unable to deliver new email to mailboxes, although it was still able to
receive the messages.
Unfortunately the problem manifested during Saturday evening and Sunday
morning, our one period with no live support coverage. our problem detection
methods failed to alert system administrators in a timely fashion, which
resulted in the problem not being resolved until Sunday morning. Once the
problem was corrected, it took several hours for the bad mail messages to be
cleared from the system before mail could begin delivery to mailboxes.
We apologize for the incoveience this may have caused you.
Lavanet will be switching to a more powerful email system later this month
which should prevent this type of problem from reoccuring. Additionally we
will be reinstituting a 24/7 emergency cell phone contact directly to system
administrators to report system wide problems. This contact will be made
available on LavaNet's contact website.

Brief Usenet Newsgroups Outage at 2pm
- From:
- LavaNet Technical Support <support@lava.net>

- Mon, 17 Apr 2006 14:30:00 -1000
At about 2:04pm, our lava.* newsgroups (lava.general, lava.lounge,
lava.test, etc.) disappeared.
I contacted SuperNews and left a message, and just got a call back.
They did some testing at about 2:21pm which had a side-effect of making
*ALL* newsgroups go away for a few minutes, but everything now appears
ok again, and all the groups are back as of 2:26pm.

to announce that in the last 24 hours we have seen a significant
reduction in the number of busy signals.

We will continue to monitor our modems and are still working with
our telecom provider to close out this issue. Any future updates

Three New Lavanauts join the Team: Yuka, Tyson, and Janette!
--------------------------------------------------
Yuka Iwashita is a new LavaNaut in our technical support
department. Yes, it is a different Yuka. This Yuka was born in Nagano,
Japan, but moved to West Virginia to attend Fairmont State University
where she graduated in 2005 with a Finance degree. She moved to Hawaii
this April hoping to experience snorkeling, scuba diving, sky diving
and many other exciting outdoor activities as well as maybe learning
how to play ukulele. So far, Yuka has climbed Diamond Head, gone on a
sunset cruise, and visited Sandy beach where she was surprised with
the big waves. She says "everyday at LavaNet is a fun and learning
experience. All the lavanauts are wonderful!!" Yuka will be joining
our Japanese speaking club here at LavaNet ready to help you however
she can.
Tyson Choy was born and raised in Honolulu and graduated in 2001 from
McKinley High School. After attending Kapiolani community College for
he joined the LavaNet tech support team in April 2006 and loves the
environment we all work in here. In his spare time he likes to to hang
out with his 3 yr. old nephew, play basketball and his X-box & dreams
of becoming a professional bowler. In intermediate school he learned
how to play the ukulele but only knows two songs: "Surf" and "In the
Jungle", although he thinks the ukulele is in storage somewhere.
Janette Duong is the newest member of our website development team,
taking on the role of Project Manager and Lead Designer! Janette
has been designing websites since 1999, and has impressed everyone
on the staff with her mastery of design elements. She enjoys video
games, books, furniture catalogs, open houses and Naruto, but not the
American version. Her favorite color is #FF6600. Janette played the
ukulele in the 4th grade and the violin in the 7th grade but please
do not ask her to play either now.

Good Friday Holiday

Two New Lavanauts join the Team, Rachel and Julian
--------------------------------------------------
Rachel Lai graduated with a BS in Information System last year and joined
the LavaNet Tech Team a month ago. One thing she likes about LavaNet is
that it provides their employees a very fun and comfortable work
environment and co-workers are always helping each other out. She believes
LavaNet always strives to provide the best customer service to their
customers and appreciates the challenging and fun experience. It has been
her privilege to have the opportunity to work with customers and assist
them to solve their problems or achieve what they need. She loves playing
guitars (electric and acoustic) and always wanted to learn the ukulele but
has to get one first.
Julian Yap is a foreign sounding individual, originally from the far off
mystical land of Oz but is loving every minute of living in Hawaii. He
is currently on the Board of Directors for HOSEF and is studying to be a
Red Hat Certified Engineer by the end of the year. Besides being a nerd,
his interests include Lost the TV show, walking his dog and spending time
with his significant other. He wishes they showed Australian Rules
Football games on television but will settle for Ultimate Fighting as a
replacement. He does not play the ukulele but has been know to dabble
with a didjeridoo!
Verizon to Hawaiian Telcom Transition woes
------------------------------------------
As many of you may know, the local telephone company Verizon Hawaii was
purchased in 2005 and renamed to Hawaiian Telcom. As of April 1st, 2006,
the final transition occurred, removing the mainland Verizon component
that had been responsible for DSL troubleshooting and order processing.
Starting April 9th, 2006, Hawaiian Telcom is solely responsible for DSL
line ordering and troubleshooting. LavaNet DSL customers continue to get
support and services from LavaNet, while the phone company provides the
support on the DSL phone line.
During this transition period, we ask for your patience and understanding
as there may be longer than usual wait times for DSL troubleshooting and
service orders. New DSL orders and speed change requests may take up to
3-5 days longer than usual. When an onsite visit by Hawaiian Telcom is
required to test or upgrade a phone line, there may be delays of up to
four days.
LavaNet will continue to provide the timely and in-depth support that you
have become accustomed to and we are working with our contacts within
Hawaiian Telcom to assist them in completing the transition as smoothly
as possible.
Message from the President
--------------------------
Greetings & Aloha,
First off, I would like to extend to all of you, my sincerest thanks for
continuing to choose LavaNet as your Internet & Solutions Provider (our
new definition of ISP).
When I started here at LavaNet in 10+ years ago, I was originally brought
on as a Customer Service representative. Over the years, I've seen how
much the internet and the ISP market has changed. Our competitors have
gotten bigger, and better in some cases, but LavaNet has always managed
to stay in the game -- playing on a field in which there's little room
for competition. Hands down, we credit this ability to our customers.
LavaNet has been known for its reputation of customer service, and for
being a very hands-on ISP. Since taking on the role as President, I've
talked to a number of you and listened to your complaints, suggestions
and comments on what we're doing right, and more importantly, what we
need to get better at doing. It's for this reason that I, and the rest
of the LavaNet team here are recommitting to providing you with the
best possible level of service. To facilitate this, we have and continue
to add more Operations/Support technicians. These positions will be fully
staffed within the month. We will also be performing a number of internal
upgrades to our network infrastructure as well as upgrades with some of
our existing vendors/carriers.
Over the next couple of months and throughout the rest of this year, we'll
be announcing and rolling out a number of new services (e.g. Disaster
Recovery/Prevention; Nationwide enabled Highspeed Wireless EVDO service;
mailbox-only accounts etc). In addition, we'll be repricing/reducing some
of our more popular existing services.
In closing, if you have any comments, complaints, concerns or suggestions,
please feel free to drop me a line at president@lava.net.
Mahalo Nui Loa and All the best,
Pali Ka`aihue
President and Old Time Resident

We will be doing maintenance on our colocation switches early Friday
night/Saturday morning on 4th March, 2006. The maintenance will last
from midnight to 2:00 AM.
There may be brief interruptions in LavaNet service to our customer
colocation equipment during the maintenance window. Dialup, DSL, email

Sterling DSL (3.0/768) joins Flat Rate Pricing!
-----------------------------------------------
We proudly announce the addition of our Sterling DSL package to our flat
rate pricing structure! Business DSL subscribers can now take advantage
of faster speeds for only $54.17 a month. Residential DSL for sterling
is also joining the flat rate club at $31.25 a month.
We are able to offer these changes thanks to our dedicated system staff
who have worked hard to improve our network infrastructure. Most DSL
subscribers can take advantage of a speed upgrade with little to no
downtime. Customers using a Frame Relay based DSL modem will be required
to purchase a new ATM based DSL modem to take advantage of the higher
speeds. Call us at 545-LAVA for more information on all of our DSL
packages.
New LavaNaut: Kevin Tagami
--------------------------
LavaNet introduces our newest hire for technical support, Kevin Tagami.
Kevin is ready and willing to help you with any questions you may have.
He has many interests: computer games, networking, computer repair, video
games, reading science fiction, learning as much as he can about the
internet, Babylon 5 the TV show, role-playing games, and work. Kevin
learned to play the ukulele when he was young, and while he can still
play it he actually prefers to play guitar (which his brother has stolen
from him!)

LAVANET NAMES SUCCESSORS FOR ITS TOP MANAGEMENT POSITIONS
---------------------------------------------------------
The LavaNet Board of Directors has named Pali Ka'aihue to be the next
company President, to take over from our current President, Yuka Nagashima
who is leaving LavaNet to pursue other interests. Matt Freeman, currently
our Business Development Manager, will be promoted to Vice President of
Operations.
We (Pali and Matt) have been long time LavaNauts, and have served many of
our customers personally. We've been training hard for some time now with
Yuka to ensure a smooth transition and to maintain our philosophy of doing
business that we call the LavaWay. We thank Yuka for many years of
service both as President (from Dec. 1998) and one of the founders (from
Jul. 1994)...how long is that in Internet years?? To our customers who
prefer to contact us in Japanese, don't worry! We have hired a native
Japanese speaker (coincidentally also named Yuka!), so LavaNet can
continue to offer Japanese customer support.
Yes, LavaNet will have a new President starting March, but you can
continue to count on us to make sure that everything else remains the
same, including our award-winning customer support.
Here's a message from Yuka:
While the announcement of the promotions is new to our customers, they
have been performing the work of senior management by my side for some
time now. Like myself, both Pali and Matt have served our customers as
front line staff. They have over 15 years of combined experience at
LavaNet having held customer service, technical support, system
administration, and sales positions to name a few. I have full confidence
in Pali, Matt and the rest of the LavaNauts to continue to deliver the
high quality of service you have come to expect.
It has been a privilege to work alongside such bright, kind and hard
working staff with such a great sense of humor. I also want to thank
you, our valued customers, for supporting the local "little ISP that
could" that grew up to be a Hawaii company renowned for our dedication
to customers, and for appreciating our quality service. It has been a
pleasure serving you.

closed on February 20. The administrative offices at LavaNet will be
closed all day on Monday. There will be reduced technical support from

LAVANET TAKES CARE OF IKANO'S CUSTOMER BASE IN HAWAII
-----------------------------------------------------
You may have already heard from the local media that LavaNet was recently
picked by the leading provider of private-label ISPs called IKANO, to
provide for their customer base in Hawaii. For a full press release, you
can go to:
<http://www.lava.net/system/status.html#1139209256>
To us, it's not so much about the expansion of our customer base, as much
as the validation of a national ISP who deemed LavaNet's technical and
customer services to be top-notch. LavaNet has continued to thrive as
national providers came into the Hawaii market, and stood our ground when
the bubble burst, because of our ability to deliver consistently
excellent service.
We'd like to emphasize now that the same customer-friendly policies, such
as the Responsible Growth Policy, that attracted the IKANO executives to
LavaNet is still in place. Our Responsible Growth Policy means that no
new customer is added unless all resources (from bandwidth capacity to
sufficient staffing) are there to serve our existing customer with the
same quality of service.
To be clear, the partnership is that of LavaNet providing local Internet
access to IKANO's customer base in Hawaii. IKANO customers continue to
use their own support staff, and LavaNet customers will continue to enjoy
the tech and customer service from our local staff right here in Hawaii.
