LavaNet debuts Spammo: a spam filter created by LavaNet developers.
A new approach to the tricky job of controlling unwanted emails
without losing valid ones. Potential as a commercial software package
currently under development.
Honolulu, Hawaii -
Local Internet solutions provider (ISP) LavaNet recently unveiled
"Spammo", an anti-spam system developed by LavaNet programmers.
Unwanted email (commonly known as "spam") is a major cost factor
for Internet users and Internet providers alike. Increasing numbers
of spam messages reduce customer productivity, clog email servers
and are just plain annoying.
Traditional anti-spam solutions have focused narrowly on one end
of the email delivery chain or the other, with mixed results.
Some filters operate at the service provider level. BrightMail is
a spam filter used by some local ISPs which pre-deletes email for
all users. Users cannot opt out, and dont even know what was filtered
out! By comparison, you can turn Spammo on or off as desired, and
can always review the email that has been flagged as spam. Spammo
allows the ISP and customer to retain administrative control of
the email delivery chain, giving quality control and privacy guarantees.
Other spam filters (like those bundled with Microsoft Outlook Express
and Netscape mail) operate on the end user's mail box. This requires
the user to download all the spam and then filter it. The down side
is that users still spend a lot of time downloading a growing number
of unwanted emails.
The traditional approaches all have flaws, and none of them seems
to catch enough spam to suit the end user.
LavaNet developers approached the problem to address the issues:
download ease, user ability to opt in and out of the filtering system,
local ISP control and protection of user data, recoverability of
"false positives", and increasing the amount of spam that is caught.
Spammo is born!
Spammo is a new breed of spam fighting system, with a unique set
of features designed to have a far reaching, positive impact in
the world of spam fighting.
In contrast to services like BrightMail where no choice is given,
Spammo is an optional service. Users can turn it on or off as they
desire.
Unlike third party systems, Spammo allows the ISP and customer to
retain administrative control of the email delivery chain. Users
can therefore choose the ISP they trust (and whose privacy policy
matches their needs best) to handle their spam filtering.
Spammo is highly unlikely to lose a valid piece of email. The user
has the ability to inspect and retrieve mistakenly flagged messages
from their "safety net" folder, an innovative Spammo feature. A
nightly report is sent to the user with the subject lines of all
flagged emails. By reviewing this list, users can scan for possible
"false positives" and can retrieve these from the server.
Spammo uses a ground-breaking set of programmed "rules" for identifying
spam. These constantly evolve as the tactics of spammers change.
It combines not only the traditional tests (like scanning the title
of the message) but also looks for unique morphological markers
of spam, including hidden "header" information and more.
Lead Spammo developer and long time anti-spam activist Michael J.
Wise said: "Spammo is designed to be as creative and ever-changing
as the tactics of spammers. Most traditional filters search titles,
and not much more. Spammers adapt and are back within a short period
of time. Spammo is designed to address these tactics with proactive
adaptability. Its rule sets have been reviewed and praised by heavy
hitters of the anti-spam community online. It's a 'better mousetrap'
for our spam filled times."
Currently available only to LavaNet customers, LavaNet sees expansion
potential for the Spammo system as a software component for email
server operators. LavaNet President and CEO Yuka Nagashima said:
"We are tremendously excited about the potential for Spammo. Spam
fighting is an intensely competitive market, just like the ISP market
we are in. We welcome the challenge of giving this great advancement
in anti-spam technology a wider audience. Locally developed software
innovations like Spammo that can be marketed outside of Hawaii will
bring money into the State, which is both good for local business
and good for Internet users."
Locally owned LavaNet, Inc., is among the largest independent Internet
Solutions Providers (ISPs) in the state, offering Internet access,
network services and web design to Hawaii and the world.

LavaNet wins "Best in Business II" award in PBN's first annual competitive
awards event!
Honolulu, Hawaii - LavaNet was selected by a distinguished panel
of judges as Hawaii's best-run business with revenues under $10
Million per year. The announcement was made at a gala awards ceremony
presented by Pacific Business News that was held November 7th.
Amidst the cheers of many LavaNet clients in attendance at the event,
President Yuka Nagashima accepted the award on behalf of the ecstatic
LavaNet crew. After the ceremony, Yuka rushed back to the office
to share the great news with the night-shift staff, who work into
the evening assisting customers and monitoring the network.
Ms. Nagashima said: "This is a great honor and a real validation
of the hard work and heart the entire staff puts into our service.
The "dot com" crash put our whole industry into a tailspin. In the
end, the companies surviving and thriving are the ones who prize
both style and substance, and have a clear, simple business plan
that inspires excellence.
We are very grateful and honored that the judges selected our nomination.
As many other hardworking Hawaii businesses know, the work needed
to make a company thrive is seldom "glamorous". It's very detail
oriented and customer service focused. Since we opened in 1994,
our growth has been modest and steady, we've remained profitable
as a company and nimble as a team.
While this may not be flashy, it's a recipe for longterm customer
satisfaction and the foundation of our hard-won reputation for approachable
expertise in a highly technical industry. It's rewarding that the
qualities we prize - ethics, intelligence and friendliness - are
acknowledged so heartily by the Hawaii business community."
